$44.4 million Georgia O’Keeffe painting sets record for female artist
The surge in art prices has been an especially male phenomenon. But now, female artists are gaining ground.
Sotheby’s just sold Georgia O’Keeffe’s iconic flower painting “Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1” for $44,405,000, or more than three times the previous world auction record for any female artist.

The prior record was $11.9 million, set by Joan Mitchell’s “Untitled” at Christie’s New York in May 2014.
The O’Keeffe piece sold for nearly three times its high estimate of $15 million, with seven bidders competing fiercely through the sale. It’s one of O’Keeffe’s famous series of flower paintings, which have become well-known throughout culture and the art world.
