Amazon may be adding a line of private-label food products to its family of in-house brands, and may weave them into its recently launched grocery delivery service, AmazonFresh.
Jason Del Rey reported in AllThingsD on several recent Amazon job listings seeking managers and higher-level executives for its private-label business, which already sells Amazon-branded computer keyboards, audio cables and batteries. It even sells its own line of bathroom towels under the Pinzon brand.
Grocery delivery is making a resurgence many years after pioneering web-based grocery service WebVan famously flamed out. Since then, companies like FreshDirect and GoodEggs have found different ways of making the business work. Amazon even hired two former Webvan executives to build up its AmazonFresh business.
As AllThingsD reported, private labels can often be great for retailers, allowing them to sell packaged products comparable to popular brands at much lower prices. Grocers like like Trader Joe’s and Aldi Supermarkets stock most of their shelf space with private-label products, often sourced from the same suppliers making branded foods.
