The dairy industry is facing a number of challenges…now including a growing backlash from a video that has gone viral – and we must warn you, some of the images are very disturbing. Rahel Solomon has the story.
Below is the full statement from the National Dairy Council:
“The U.S. dairy community has a long-standing and strong commitment to animal welfare and takes allegation of animal abuse very seriously. Like consumers, we are deeply disappointed and saddened by the actions shown in the video as animal abuse in any form is not tolerated on U.S. dairy farms.
Currently, according to IRI data, dairy milk has a place in 94% of American households while cheese is enjoyed in 98% of American homes. We want to assure the many people who enjoy nutrient-rich milk and other dairy foods that they can continue to do so knowing that dairy farmers have a strong legacy and commitment to caring for their animals, the land and their people.
In fact, 98 percent of the U.S. milk supply is represented through the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Animal Care program that sets animal care standards for all participating farms. The FARM program is the first livestock animal care program in the world to be recognized by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Animal Welfare Management standards.
The recent videos released are in no way indicative of how our country’s dairy farm families operate. As a community we are deeply committed to continuous improvement in all aspects of animal care.”
