Apple has announced a temporary workaround for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality after installing an update to iOS 8.
“The bugs call into question whether Apple fully tested the software update before releasing it. There’s a reason it seemingly takes forever to get an update for your Android phone—it needs to be vetted by both the handset maker and the carrier. Apple seemingly bypasses this process,” said Roger Cheng, CNET News executive editor.
Users who have experienced lost network connectivity issues after updating their devices to iOS 8.0.1 were unable to fix the problem by simply restarting their device or by resetting the network devices. They were also unable to fix the Touch ID by removing and reinstalling their fingerprints.
Cheng noted that the workaround isn’t perfect, but it is necessary and if a user has upgraded to iOS 8.0.1, they will need to reinstall iOS 8 using the latest version of iTunes.
“Also, Apple’s health app won’t work with the temporary workaround, but it might not be a huge deal because the app just launched and there likely won’t be too many people invested in it,” Cheng said.
Apple said in a statement on Wednesday that it expects to release the iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue in the next few days.
